Experience 17 Monday evenings in 2009-10; celebrate and commemorate the anniversaries of Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel, Joseph Haydn, Frédéric Chopin, and the longevity of Elliott Carter. The most comprehensive recital series in the area continues to feature compelling presentations of solo repertoire, dynamic readings of the great chamber literature, exhilarating period instrument performances, provocative premieres of new works, and distinctive approaches to both classic and contemporary jazz.
Faculty Artist Series concerts are presented in the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall of the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. All are free to the public. For more information call (317) 788-3255.

UIndy brass faculty welcome guest Daniel Golando for a performance of Eugène Bozza’s Sonatine for brass quintet.

The group Kilho performs music featured on the upcoming Owl Studios release “Abacus.” These new compositions by Frank Glover reflect the diverse influences of Astor Piazzolla, Toru Takemitsu, fusion, and electronic music—all performed by this high-energy ensemble.

Faculty flutist Anne Reynolds teams with colleagues and distinguished guests for an eclectic evening of Ignace Pleyel from the 1780s (one of his delightful Quartets for flute and strings), the American George Crumb from the 1980s (“An Idyll for the Misbegotten”), and Gabriela Lena Frank from our own century (her recent “Sueños de Chambi: Snapshots for an Andean Album”). The centerpiece of the program: Beethoven’s Serenade for flute, violin, and viola, Op. 25.

Richard Ratliff celebrates the 2010 bicentennial of the birth of Frédéric Chopin with selections from the innovative Polish master’s Mazurkas, Waltzes, and Polonaises. Ratliff acknowledges Chopin’s considerable influence on later generations by presenting Chopin-inspired pieces by composers from the 19th through 21st centuries: music of Alexander Scriabin, George Rochberg, UIndy’s John Berners, and the premiere of a new work written especially for the occasion by Richard Pressley.

The New Century String Quartet celebrates its 10th season with a potpourri of NCSQ commissions since 2001 from Indiana composers James Beckel, Peter Hansen, and Chris Rutkowski. Paying tribute to children of the world who constantly inspire us to reach for our dreams, a newly commissioned work by Frank Felice receives its premiere. Also featured: Heitor Villa-Lobos’ String Quartet No. 5 of 1931, based on Brazilian children’s songs.

UIndy faculty feature an evening of contrasts beginning with classic works of the 20th century: Villa-Lobos’ lively Trio for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon from 1921 and the resigned melancholy of Shostakovich’s settings of Alexander Blok (Op. 127 for soprano and piano trio). Ariana Kim represents music of our own time with the gripping “Rhapsodic Musings” for solo violin by the venerable Elliott Carter, while music of Mozart resolves all tension and ambiguity with the exquisite Piano Trio in G Major, K. 496.

Again our Season Finale features a whirlwind tour of three continents, opening with Georg Philipp Telemann’s dramatic cantata for countertenor, violin, and continuo, “Ergeuss dich zur Salbung.” You will hear our accomplished wind faculty in Samuel Barber’s classic “Summer Music” from 1955, music of Serbian composer Olivera Vojna Nešić for alto saxophone and bayan accordion, and a quartet of percussionists led by Paul Berns in Michael Udow’s Four Movements. Thomas Tudek performs Russian composer Nikita Koshkin’s tour-de-force “Usher Waltz” for solo guitar, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. The evening concludes with Claude Bolling’s Suite for flute and jazz trio featuring Jodi Sowers and Rebecca Sorley.
