Jazz Week: Bossa Rio Sextet

UIndy Director of Jazz Studies Harry Miedema and his group perform Brazilian-flavored jazz arrangements with the unique instrumentation of two trombones, a tenor sax, and a rhythm section. The sextet’s pieces often feature complex harmonies and melodies that emphasize beats normally weak in American music. In addition to Miedema, the sextet includes trombonists Brent Wallarab and Richard Dole, pianist Claude Sifferlen, bassist Joe Deal, and drummer Kevin Johnson.

Jazz Week: UIndy Jazz Ensemble

UIndy’s own big band, led by Harry Miedema, is composed of students who audition for membership in the ensemble prior to the fall semester. In addition to performing in concert throughout the year, the Jazz Ensemble serves as a laboratory experience for the Jazz Pedagogy course.

Saxophonist Jamey Aebersold is internationally-renowned for his “Play-A-Long” jazz education and improvisation aids and summer jazz workshops that occur around the world. The New Albany native graduated from Indiana University and is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame. In addition to the saxophone, Aebersold also plays the piano, bass, and banjo and is a faculty member at the University of Louisville.

For 15 years, the Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra has been dedicated to the creation of new works for jazz orchestra and developing programs for jazz education. The group was founded by Brent Wallarab and Mark Buselli, both accomplished artists in their own right. Wallarab, currently a faculty member at Indiana University, has served as a Specialist in Jazz for the Smithsonian Institution since 1991. He is a widely published arranger, composer, scholar, and performer. Buselli, the director of Jazz Studies at Ball State University, has over 40 arrangements published for big bands, six recordings as a leader, and has performed with several jazz greats and for four presidents.

Based in Columbus, Oh., this 21-piece big band is led by trombonist Vaughn Wiester. The accomplished performer has traveled with several groups, including the Woody Herman Orchestra, and helped pioneer the Jazz Studies program at Capital University in Columbus. Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra, a “Young Blood” big band, sports a 12-piece brass section and appears every Monday at the Columbus Music Hall.

Five-time Grammy award-winning trumpeter Randy Brecker boasts a storied career that includes performances with dozens of legendary musicians across many genres. The Philadelphia native attended Indiana University and has been a member of a number of jazz groups, including pairing with brother Michael for many years as part of the multi-Grammy nominated Brecker Brothers. He has recorded on hundreds of albums, including many as a leader, and has performed around the world.

Top public school jazz bands perform and learn from local pros during this annual event. Bands perform every hour on the hour for 25 minutes, followed by a 30-minute clinic with professional musicians.

Trombonist Mike Davis boasts an accomplished career as a musician, teacher, composer, and even entrepreneur. The San Jose, Ca., native has performed with music greats in several genres, including the Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Nelly, Harry Connick, Jr., and Bon Jovi. A graduate of the prestigious Eastman School of Music, Davis has received several awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and has five solo CDs to his credit. He currently runs Hip-Bone Music, a business dedicated to increasing the popularity and stature of brass instruments.

Bassist Rufus Reid has enjoyed a long and accomplished jazz career. The award-winning musician and composer has played with such jazz legends as Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Dizzy Gillespie, and J.J. Johnson, and has performed on more than 250 recordings. A graduate of Northwestern University, Reid is also known for his definitive teaching book The Evolving Bassist. He also has taught at Jamey Aebersold summer jazz camps and spent 20 years as the director of jazz studies and performance at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ.
